A few weeks ago I got a chance to be featured on another Podcast. This time, alongside my wife, we were interviewed by Lawrence Joseph over at The Black Mentor Podcast. He aims to interview various black, successful individuals in their respective fields to highlight their achievements. But also provide education and mentoring to his listeners. We had an amazing time being interviewed and have gotten positive feedback from people who heard the show.
For me, it was also a learning experience. It was the first time I had been interviewed since my college football days and a reminder that I don’t like talking about myself. I can also go as far as saying that I really don’t like talking. I don’t like “small talk” that is. I love having deep meaningful conversations, but when it’s time for small talk, I’d rather just sit in the corner and keep quiet. I’ve been like this my entire life so I never developed my speaking skills as well as I could have. I took a public speaking course as an elective in college just to attack that weakness of mine. Now, I have a podcast of my own where all I do is speak! Lord, how did I end up here?
I know how. I know that life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself. I also know that nothing great happens inside of your comfort zone. The magic happens OUTSIDE of your comfort zone.
So if I’m going to be speaking and being interviewed, it’s an area I should improve on. And fast!
The Black Mentor Podcast Interview
Before you go and think the interview with Lawrence Joseph was a complete disaster let me assure you that it wasn’t. There were just times when I was repeating the same things, stuttering, and even went silent for a few seconds LOL! Ok, it wasn’t the best. But a few of his listeners reached out and said they really appreciate the things they got from the interview and also congratulated Denita and me on our successes. And that equals a successful interview. Period.
But since then, I’ve ordered the book TED Talks: The Official TED Guide To Public Speaking just to improve in an area I know I can become better in.
So this post is about creating yourself. If you want to motivate people one day but think you can’t because you aren’t a natural speaker, then learn how to become one! That goes with anything in life! If there’s something you want to do but feel you can’t because it doesn’t come naturally to you, then learn everything you can about it and become better at it. Get outside of your comfort zone and be magical.
My wife on the other hand still amazes me as she speaks. During the interview, Lawrence asked her: “How did your husband’s layoff affect you, knowing that your security would be threatened now?” Her answer was downright remarkable, and one that I could only smile and be thankful for as I listened.
Be sure to subscribe to his podcast also to hear other inspiring and educational stories from black entrepreneurs and mentors who are making a difference. He also has a great ebook titled: The Millionaire Mentor Guide: 3 Keys That Helped Me Have 3 Millionaire Mentors By Age 30. It’s free on his site.
And remember, again. Life isn’t about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself. So create whatever it is you want to. And do whatever it takes to be good at it.
Until next time.
